Opening Observation

I needed an evergreen shrub for the shaded space around my chimney. It had to stay near three feet so it would not block the low windows. Flowers were on my wish list, and fragrance would be a bonus. ChatGPT recommended Sweet & Lo™ Sweet Box (Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis ‘Sweet & Lo’).

I could not find it locally, and the nursery staff did not recognize the name, which made me question whether it would work in my zone. ChatGPT reassured me it would, calling it a hidden gem. I ordered five from Proven Winners and planted them in spring 2025.

Where It Lives

These five shrubs form the backbone of my chimney garden. There is a low window on each side of the chimney. I placed two shrubs in front of each window to frame them without blocking the view. The fifth sits in another part of the yard to visually connect the flowerbed across the yard.

They were planted into compost-enriched soil and mulched. The bed is shaded and protected, which suits them well. I have already seen new growth and the foliage looks clean and glossy.

What It Is

Sweet & Lo is a compact, broadleaf evergreen with a low, mounding habit. Mature height is around three feet, with a slightly wider spread. Leaves are dark green and glossy. As temperatures cool, small flower buds form. The winter bloom is subtle and fragrant, which is part of the appeal. You can find Sweet & Lo Sweet Box at Nature Hills.

Observed Performance: Year 1

Planted spring 2025. Growth has been steady, with new layers of leaves through the season. In late October and early November, I began to see buds forming for winter bloom. Plants are mulched and set in compost-rich soil, and they are settling in well.

Personal Notes

I like how composed these look against the brick and under the windows. The glossy leaves make the shaded corner feel finished without feeling heavy. I am looking forward to seeing the flowers in winter and noticing how the fragrance behaves in cold air.

Studio Summary

Sweet & Lo™ Sweet Box is doing exactly what I hoped. It stays low, holds evergreen color, and gives the chimney garden quiet structure without blocking the windows. The buds showing now suggest a good first winter. I am glad I trusted the recommendation.
